Elliot Gregory, 20, and Philip Zuvanich, 19, were killed when an older Jeep they in went off the roadway on Route 34 into a heavily wooded ravine near Jordan Hill Road around 2 a.m., Sunday, June 23, said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde of the Newtown Police Department.
The medical examiner's office said both men died of died from blunt impact injuries.
"Our hearts are heavy this morning and our prayers are with both families as they go through this most difficult time. Our community mourns with them" Bahamonde said.
The Newtown Police Accident Reconstruction team is investigating the crash, said Bahamonde. Police did not say who was driving.
An obituary for Gregory said that he was a talented lacrosse athlete and played for Newtown High School. He also shared a passion for the outdoors and loved to kayak, fish, and hike.
"He will be remembered for his unselfish, generous heart and his never-ending quick wit," the obituary said.
He is survived by his parents Hank and Karen, his brothers, Christopher and Tyler and his sisters, Abigail, Rebecca, and Allison. He was predeceased by his mother Mary Ellen Collins Gregory.
A memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 28, for Gregory with a remembrance devotion at 6:30 p.m. at Spadaccino & Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe.
Friends and family of Zuvanich will also gather from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, June 28, at the same location. Further information was not available.
